It’s hard to believe that despite all the success enjoyed by Mario and friends until 2015 Nintendo didn’t have their own retail site. What was even harder to believe when they first approached us in August that year was they wanted the full site live and selling in time for Christmas. Add to that the small matter of 25GB of guidelines to work through, and an approval process that crossed multiple countries and timezones, and the size of the task becomes even more daunting.
But we do like a challenge. Ideally challenges that involve cake.
Whilst there were only ten of us working on the project, our tight-knit team allowed us to combine agile processes with creative ones. We streamlined approval by making Nintendo’s commercial team part of our in-house delivery team, with directors working side by side with our designers and developers. We also designed everything in code, so even early presentations were fully interactive. Was it ready in time for December? No – we’d hit the live button and were eating cake by the end of October. Game on.
